LaPorte County Health Department Lead Testing

We will conduct lead testing for children 6 months to 6 years old and pregnant women by appointment only.

Please call (219) 326-6808 or (219) 874-5611 ext. 2200 to make an appointment.

Free lead testing is for anyone with young children 6 months to 6 years old that want to know if their child has been exposed to lead. It is also important for pregnant women to be tested since lead poisoning is passed through the blood to the unborn child.

Typically lead poisoning is seen in young children around the time that they are teething and putting everything in their mouths.

If you live in an older home, it is possible that some of the paint used in the home could have had lead paint in it. If it is intact there is not cause for alarm. If it is peeling or if it was remodeled with pregnant women or children in the home, these individuals should be lead tested.

Even though lead paint is the leading cause of lead poisoning, it is not the ONLY source of lead. Many products still contain lead today. If these products become defective in anyway and the lead is exposed, it increases the risk that a child could become lead poisoned. If you have any doubt, please have your child tested.

If your child has a blood lead level above 10 micrograms of lead per deciliter of blood (μg/dL) a nurse and a certified lead risk inspector will visit your home.
