Center Township is the second largest township in LaPorte County with 15,000 parcels. The office is responsible for updating assessment information on real and personal property. We have all the property record cards for Center Township on file in the office; this information is obtained through the Proval and Equitax computer programs. We also have plat map information available. The annual assessment date is March 1st of any year. This office also has digital pictures of all homes attached to the property record cards on file.

New Construction is added to the county tax roll through building permits that are issued by the City of LaPorte and through the County Planning Commission. Splits and transfer of property in Center Township are also recorded on property received cards in the office. A general reassessment is completed every four years as mandated by the State of Indiana

Personal Property

Taxpayers are required to file personal property forms with the Township Assessor's Office by May 15th each year. An extension up to 30 days may be granted if the taxpayer has a written request filed with the Assessor by May 15th. Personal property returns are mailed out the 1st of March and can also be picked up at the Township Assessor's Office.

Appealing an Assessment

To appeal an assessment the taxpayer must file a form 130 with the County Assessor's Office within 45 days of receiving a Form 11 (notice of assessment change) or by May 10th. After you have filled form 130, the Township Assessor will attempt to conduct a preliminary conference with the taxpayer to resolve as many issues as possible about the assessment.  If the issues are not able to be resolved with the Township Assessor a hearing will be set with the County Property Tax Assessment Board of Appeals.

Dog Tags

Each year dog tags are available from January 1st to September 15th at the Township Assessor's Office. The remaining of the year the dog tags are available at the Township Trustees Office. Dog tags are $2.00 neutered, $4.00 non-neutered, each additional dog $6.00, minor kennel (less than 15 dogs) $20.00 and major kennel (over 15 dogs) $30.00.

If you have any questions regarding your real estate assessment or your personal property assessment please call or come into the office at your convenience.
